Everything about dacron in Upholstery and Wallcoverings

What is Dacron, Fiberfill and Wattine?

Dacron, fiberfill and wattine are terms that are often used interchangeably in upholstery and interior finishing. They all refer to synthetic or natural filling materials used to make furniture, wall panels and other interior applications softer and more comfortable.

  • Dacron is a brand name for a polyester fiber known for its durability and resilience. It is often used as an intermediate layer for upholstery.

  • Fiber fill is a generic term for synthetic polyester fibers used as fillers in furniture, pillows and duvets.

  • Wattine is a more traditional term and is often associated with both synthetic and natural filling materials, such as cotton and wool.

  • Volume fleece is a soft filling that is available in different grammages and provides extra comfort and volume in upholstery applications.

Applications in Upholstery

Dacron and fiberfill are widely used in the furniture industry because of their unique properties:

  1. Sofas and armchairs: Dacron is often used as an intermediate layer between the upholstery and the foam filling of seating furniture. This ensures a sleek and even appearance and prevents wear of the fabric against the foam.

  2. Chairs and cushions: Fiberfill is used to give seat cushions extra volume and comfort without making them feel too hard.

  3. Box springs and mattresses: Wattine or fiberfill is used in the covering of box springs and mattresses to create a soft top layer.

Wallcoverings and Decorative Applications

In addition to upholstery, wattine or fiberfill is also used in wall coverings:

  • Acoustic panels: Fiberfill and dacron are often used as an underlay in wall panels to improve sound-absorbing properties.

  • Upholstered walls: In luxury interiors, wattine is used behind fabric wall coverings to create a soft, quilted appearance.

Why Choose Fiberfill?

The benefits of these materials include:

  • Sustainability: They retain their shape and resilience for a long time.

  • Comfort: They add extra softness and padding without weakening the furniture structure.

  • Protection: They prevent friction between the fabric and the foam, which extends the life of the upholstery.
