Sewing machine needles

The needle is a small component with a major impact on your result. Always choose based on two points: the type of needle, which determines how the point is shaped, and the thickness, which should match the weight of your fabric. The number on the needle, for example 80/12, indicates the thickness: 80 stands for 0.80 mm, 12 is the American size. A thin needle (60 to 70) is suitable for fine fabrics, you use 80 to 90 for medium-weight fabrics, and for heavy fabrics, you choose 100 or thicker.

At BLADI, you will find Schmetz needles in sets of 5 or 10: Universal, Jersey, Jeans, Gold Jeans, Leather, Microtex, Topstitch, Overlock, stretch needles, and self-threading needles. A self-threading needle is useful if threading is difficult.

• Cotton, polyester and regular woven fabric: a Universal needle in sizes 70 to 100 is the most versatile choice.
• Jersey, tricot and stretch: choose a Jersey, Stretch or Black Super Stretch needle with a rounded tip.
• Denim, canvas and heavy fabrics: a Jeans or Gold Jeans needle in sizes 90 to 110 penetrates thick layers easily.
• Faux leather and leather: use a Leather needle with a sharp tip, for example in size 90 or 100.
• Fine, delicate fabrics: a Microtex needle with a very sharp tip ensures precise stitches.
• Topstitching with thick thread: a Topstitch needle has an extra-large eye.
• Overlock machine: choose the Overlock needle designed for that type of machine.

Are you sewing cushion covers or other projects using upholstery fabric? Upholstery fabrics are thicker and more tightly woven than garment fabric. Therefore, choose a sturdy needle, often in size 90 to 110, and adjust the thickness of your thread to the needle. A needle that is too thin may bend or break, while one that is too thick will leave visible holes. Always test on a scrap piece of the same fabric first.

Use a leather needle for faux leather and a jeans or topstitch needle for thick layers. If you are working with two layers of fabric and a seam that will endure a lot of stress, a slightly longer stitch length and a slightly thicker needle will help ensure the seam runs smoothly.

Replace your needle for every new project and as soon as you see skipped stitches, snagging thread, or small holes in the fabric. A dull or bent needle damages your fabric and puts strain on your machine. Keep your needles together in their packaging so you always know which size you are using.
