Making DIY Wall Coverings: Stylish Interior Fabric on MDF Panels
Covering walls with fabric is a stylish and unique way to add atmosphere to your interior. Not only does it add texture and warmth, but it also provides a luxurious look. In this DIY guide you will learn step by step how to make beautiful wall coverings yourself using upholstery fabrics, fiberfill, MDF boards, and spray adhesive. This project is perfect for those who want to add a unique touch to their living or working space!
Materials you need:
- Furniture fabric (e.g. velvet, chenille, gobelin, jacquard, linen look or ottoman)
- Fiber fill (for a soft, padded look)
- 18 mm MDF boards (or lighter MDF if you want to work with Velcro)
- Glue spray (for sticking the fiberfill)
- Contact adhesive (to attach the MDF boards to the wall)
- Velcro (if you use lighter MDF boards)
- Staple gun (to stretch the fabric over the MDF board)
Step 1: Choose the right fabric
Bee Bladi upholstery fabrics you will find a wide range of interior fabrics. Consider fabrics with woven motifs such as gobelin and jacquard, or fabrics with printed motifs such as velvet or linen look. Pay close attention to the report height of the fabric, especially if you want to cover larger areas, to maintain a nice continuous pattern.
Step 2: Preparing the MDF panels
Use MDF boards with a thickness of approximately 18 mm for a sturdy and durable surface. Cut the MDF panels to size, depending on the size of the wall you want to cover.
Step 3: Apply fiberfill
For an extra soft and luxurious look you can fiberfill use. This material provides a quilted effect and gives the wall more volume. Use one adhesive spray to stick the fiberfill to the MDF board. Make sure that the fiberfill adheres well and is tight on the plate.
Step 4: Attaching the Fabric
Place the chosen furniture fabric over the fiberfill-covered MDF board. Make sure that the fabric is stretched taut and that the pattern looks nice. Use one staple gun to staple the fabric to the back of the MDF board. Start in the center of the plate and work towards the edges to avoid wrinkles. Pull the fabric taut while stapling so that it remains nice and smooth.
Step 5: Attach the plates to the wall
Now that your MDF boards are covered, it's time to attach them to the wall. There are two options:
- With contact adhesive: For a firm and permanent attachment, use contact adhesive. Apply the glue to the back of the MDF boards and the wall, then press the boards firmly into place.
- With Velcro: Would you prefer a flexible and less permanent solution? Then use Velcro. This is especially useful when you use lighter MDF boards. Attach the Velcro to the back of the MDF panel and to the wall and press the panel firmly.
Optional tip: Make a tapestry
In addition to covering entire walls, you can also choose to make a wall hanging from the fabric. This is a simpler solution where you provide the fabric with a tunnel at the top and bottom. By inserting a rod through the tunnels, you can easily hang the tapestry on a nail or hook on the wall.
