A dining room chair that is used daily, a camper sofa that must be able to withstand a beating or a sleek wall covering: faux leather is a practical and stylish choice for many upholstery projects. The material is available in a surprising number of structures, colors and qualities. However, if you choose only on color, you may end up with a material that is less suitable for the use of the furniture. The right choice therefore starts with the application.
What is faux leather exactly?
faux leather is a covering material with a textile backing and a plastic top layer. The top layer often has the appearance of real leather, but can also look matte, finely grained, smooth or industrial. in the furniture industry faux leather also under names such as skai, vinyl or imitation leather. These terms are regularly used interchangeably, while composition and properties differ per product.
The two best-known variants are PVCfaux leather and PUfaux leather. PVC is generally sturdy, dimensionally stable and resistant to moisture. This makes it a logical choice for intensively used chairs, catering equipment, boats or certain automotive applications. PU often feels softer and smoother and usually has a more leather-like appearance. This is nice for a luxurious armchair or a modern sofa, but here too: look beyond just the feeling in the hand.
A good quality faux leather combines a strong top layer with a back that is suitable for upholstery. The thickness, stretch, wear resistance and any protective finish ultimately determine how the material behaves during and after coating.
faux leather choose: start with use
The most beautiful color is only really beautiful when the furniture still looks well cared for after a lot of use. Therefore, ask a simple question in advance: what does this covering have to endure on a daily basis? A decorative bench in a bedroom requires something different than chairs in a waiting room or a family car.
For chairs, sofas and home use
For dining room chairs is a good removable faux leather often ideal. Stains from food, drinks or children's hands can usually be removed quickly. Pay attention to the flexibility of chairs with a sharp edge or deep padding. Material that is too stiff is difficult to pull tightly into corners and may fall less smoothly under strong tension.
Comfort is more important for sofas and armchairs. A flexible PU quality with a pleasant grip usually feels better than a hard, cold top layer. Do you have pets? Then don't choose blindly faux leather as a miracle solution. Hair and dirt are easy to remove, but... sharp nails can cause damage. Strong, high quality helps, but does not prevent scratches due to intensive use.
For catering and projects
In catering, healthcare, practice spaces and other project interiors, ease of maintenance is often decisive. In addition to color and structure, look at the technical specifications. Wear resistance gives an indication of the resistance to friction, while tear strength and tensile strength are important for tightly upholstered furniture that is often loaded.
Sometimes there are also specific requirements for fire safety, cleaning or disinfection. Check these conditions before ordering, not when the chairs are already at the upholsterer. A project quality may be more expensive per metre, but is often cheaper than premature re-covering.
For car, camper and boat
faux leather for automotive, campers or boats is exposed to temperature changes, sunlight, moisture and intensive contact. A material that works beautifully indoors may not last long outside a vehicle or on the water. Therefore, choose a quality that is explicitly suitable for the application in question.
UV resistance, moisture resistance and a stable back are particularly relevant here. Comfort is also important in a camper interior: a surface that is too smooth can feel warm in the sun and cold in winter. A sample viewing at home or in the vehicle provides more insight than a photo on a screen.
Pay attention to color, structure and finish
faux leather is no longer limited to glossy black or standard cognac. Think of warm sand tones, calm greige, deep green, petrol, burgundy and modern gray tones. A matte finish often looks calmer and hides light signs of use better. A glossy variant can go well with a retro chair, a bar or a distinctive interior concept.
The grain also makes a difference. A fine leather look is widely applicable and gives a neat, timeless appearance. A coarser grain looks more natural and can better camouflage small irregularities in the surface. For a sleek panel or a minimalist chair, a smoother one faux leather usually more beautiful, provided the surface is perfectly flat.
When in doubt, always order one sample. Colors change due to daylight, the color of surrounding materials and the settings of your screen. With a sample you can also feel how much stretch it is faux leather and assess whether the structure suits your project.
faux leather process without unnecessary problems
A neat result starts with a neat surface. Remove old staples, loose foam residue and sharp edges before using new ones faux leather applies. Damaged foam or worn it is best to replace it immediately. New coverings over a poor base may look nice on the first day, but quickly reveal defects again.
faux leather often has stretch in one direction and less in the other. Determine that direction before cutting, especially for seats, round shapes and panels. Lay out the material generously, stretch from the center outwards and secure it on opposite sides each time. This prevents the upholstery from warping or forming folds.
Use sturdy staples that match your surface and tools. When it comes to wood, staples are a quick and reliable choice, while... contact adhesive can be useful for, for example, thin panels, edges or parts where stapling is not possible. Update adhesive carefully and according to the product instructions. Merge too early or too much adhesive use can cause visible imperfections.
For a neat finish on edges, seams or cushions, suitable thread, piping and a good sewing machine are at least as important as the faux leather itself. Beginners are advised to sew a test piece first. The stitch length, needle size and tension determine whether the seam remains flat and does not wrinkle.
Maintenance: clean with care
A big advantage of that faux leather is that daily maintenance remains simple. Remove dust and loose dirt with a soft, slightly damp cloth. With a fresh stain, acting quickly is best: dab gently and clean with lukewarm water and a mild detergent that is suitable for faux leather.
Avoid aggressive degreasers, bleaches, abrasives and solvents. These can damage the protective layer, making the surface dull, sticky or brittle. A scouring pad is also not a good idea, no matter how stubborn the stain seems. Test a cleaner on an inconspicuous area first if you are unsure of the reaction.
Place furniture with faux leather preferably not in bright sunlight or directly against a heat source for a long time. Long-term heat can affect the lifespan, especially for dark colors. Regular light cleaning is better than occasional hard scrubbing.
Compare quality without guessing
Price differences between species faux leather are there for a reason. An affordable quality can work great for a decorative pillow, a small hobby project or a piece of furniture that is rarely used. For a dining room chair set, company interior or serial production, consistent color, sufficient stock and reliable technical properties are usually more important.
Therefore, do not just compare the price per metre. Look at the width, composition, thickness, elongation, abrasion resistance and recommended application. Also take into account cutting loss on patterns, seams and repeating shapes. For multiple chairs from one project, it is wise to order everything at the same time, so that color differences between paint batches are limited.
