How to choose the right fabric or fiberfill

A well-upholstered piece of furniture consists of more than just the visible fabric. Between the foam and the upholstery fabric, there is often a layer of fiberfill, the underside is finished with dust cover fabric, and anti-slip material keeps cushions in place. In this collection, you will find these components by the meter, and fiberfill and PP spunbond also by the roll.

Fiberfill (also known as dacron, batting, or volume fleece) is 150 cm wide and available in three thicknesses: 100 g/m² (± 1 cm, 60-meter roll), 200 g/m² (± 2 cm, 30-meter roll), and 300 g/m² (± 3 cm, 20-meter roll). You will always receive one continuous piece, even if you order multiple meters. A full roll is vacuum-packed: unpack it immediately upon receipt so the fleece can regain its volume.

Comparing fabrics: which one fits your project?

  • Seat or back cushion with a rounder shape: lay fiberfill over the foam. Choose 100 g/m² for a light rounding and 200 or 300 g/m² for a full, soft top layer.
  • Underside of a sofa, chair, or cushion: finish with bottom fabric. Fibertex is 150 cm wide; PP spunbond is a black non-woven bottom fabric of 70 g/m².
  • Non-reversible cushions: use bottom fabric on the underside so you only need upholstery fabric for the visible parts.
  • Cushions that slide: place anti-slip material under the cushion. The anti-slip mat is 60 cm wide and washable up to 30 °C.
  • Larger project or regular upholstery: choose a full roll of fiberfill or PP spunbond (250 meters).

More applications for fiberfill

Fiberfill is not only useful for upholstery. It is also used as cushion filling, for quilting, and for duvets, playpen mats, toys, tea cozies, and oven mitts, as well as for lining jackets and in filters. You can therefore also use it for sewing and craft projects. Here is how to choose the thickness: a thin layer of 100 g/m² is suitable for light projects like linings, while a thick layer of 300 g/m² provides plenty of volume for cushions and soft padding. Still unsure? Combine two layers or start with a thinner version and build up, as you can always add extra layers later.

Processing fiberfill and underlay fabric

First, measure your cushion or seat and determine how much length you need, including some margin to fold the fabric over. Cut fiberfill and bottom fabric with a sharp knife or scissors; take a look at our range of knives for this purpose. Lay the fiberfill smoothly over the foam without pulling it tight, so that it retains its volume. Secure the bottom fabric with staples from the staple guns and staples collection.

For other upholstery supplies, take a look at other upholstery items. Are you fully refurbishing a piece of furniture? Then new furniture legs would be a great addition. Not sure which fabric you need? Send your project via WhatsApp or visit our showroom in Antwerp.
