Replacing sofa legs can change the appearance of a sofa and may affect its stability or seat height. The fixing method, load capacity, height and strength of the frame are more important than appearance alone.
Can the sofa legs be replaced?
With another person, carefully place the sofa on its back or side and inspect the construction. Legs may screw into mounting plates or threaded inserts, be fixed with wood screws, or form part of a permanent structure. Repair cracked timber, loose fixings or a weakened frame before fitting new legs.
Long sofas, corner sofas and sofa beds may use additional centre supports. Do not remove structural supports without checking their function.
Measure before choosing
Measure the existing height, thread size, fixing-hole positions and available mounting area. M8 is common but not universal; thread length and mounting method must also match.
Height, shape and material
Changing leg height affects seat height, appearance and loading. Timber creates a warmer look, metal a cleaner modern appearance, while plastic can be practical. Choose a design according to the manufacturer’s stated load capacity as well as style.
Replacing sofa legs in 7 steps
1. Make the work area safe
Remove loose cushions and protect the floor and upholstery with a blanket or cardboard. Move heavy sofas with two people where possible.
2. Remove the old legs
Undo the existing fixings with the correct tool. If a mounting plate turns or the timber is damaged, repair the fixing before continuing.
3. Inspect the frame
The timber around the fixing point must be sound. Stripped holes or damaged structural members need a proper repair.
4. Fit mounting plates if required
Attach new plates only to a solid structural part of the frame. Pre-drill where appropriate and use screws that obtain sufficient purchase without penetrating the seat or upholstery.
5. Fit the new legs
Install every leg straight and according to its fixing system. Do not overtighten.
6. Return the sofa upright
Check that all legs carry evenly and that the sofa does not rock.
7. Test under load
Apply weight evenly at first and then recheck the fixings.
Protect the floor
Suitable felt glides can protect sensitive flooring. Recheck new fixings after the first few weeks, especially on a heavy or frequently used sofa.
When are new legs not enough?
New legs will not repair a sagging seat, failed suspension or broken frame. Resolve structural faults first and seek professional advice if the construction or damage is unclear.
