Choosing upholstery fabric for a camper
Camper seating is used intensively, so consider abrasion resistance, comfort, care, light fastness and how well the fabric can be upholstered around the shape of the cushions.
Material choice
Closely woven upholstery fabrics are versatile and practical. Chenille, velvet and corduroy offer a softer, more textured appearance, while faux leather can provide a wipe-clean surface depending on the quality. Always check the technical specifications and care instructions of the individual fabric.
Sunlight, use and pets
Strong sunlight inside a camper can affect colours over time, so check the stated light-fastness rating. Around pets, compact structures without long open loops are often more practical; no fabric is completely scratch-proof.
Upholstery and fabric quantity
Measure seat and back cushions including their sides, thickness and seam allowances. Take account of fabric width, pattern repeat and pile or rib direction. If the foam is worn, assess the filling as well; fiberfill can create a softer, fuller finish depending on the construction.
Care
Remove sand and crumbs regularly with a soft upholstery attachment. Treat stains according to the care instructions for the particular fabric. With faux leather, avoid harsh cleaners and solvents unless specifically approved by the manufacturer.
