How to choose bouclé fabric for furniture
Bouclé is recognised by its characteristic looped texture and gives armchairs, sofas, ottomans and dining chairs a soft, dimensional appearance. For furniture, however, appearance should not be the only consideration: usage, weave density, abrasion resistance and care also matter.
Choose for the intended use
A coarser, softer texture can work well on decorative furniture. For seating used every day, a more compact upholstery quality is usually more practical. Check the Martindale rating and the other technical specifications of the particular fabric.
In homes with pets, long or open loops can be more prone to snagging. No upholstery fabric is completely scratch-proof, although a denser structure may be a more suitable choice.
Colour and upholstery
Bouclé can look different as the light changes because of its texture. A fabric sample helps you assess colour and feel in your own room. When cutting, consider the fabric width, direction of the texture and sufficient allowance for seams and fastening.
Care
Vacuum bouclé gently with a soft upholstery attachment. Blot spills promptly rather than rubbing them in. Only use cleaning methods suitable for the specific fabric and test products on an inconspicuous area first.
