How to choose water-repellent upholstery fabric
Water-repellent upholstery fabrics can help slow the absorption of spilled liquids. Water-repellent does not, however, mean waterproof or stain-proof. The properties and care instructions of the specific fabric always determine what you can expect.
Consider the application
For sofas, dining chairs and other frequently used furniture, consider abrasion resistance, weave structure, comfort and cleanability as well as any water-repellent finish. A water-repellent treatment alone does not indicate overall durability.
In homes with pets, a compact weave may be more practical than long or open loops. No upholstery fabric is completely scratch-proof.
Assess colour and texture
Woven fabrics, chenille and velvet may be available with water-repellent properties depending on the quality. If in doubt, order a sample and assess the colour, texture and feel in your own room.
Dealing with spills
Blot spilled liquid promptly with a clean, absorbent cloth and avoid vigorous rubbing. Only use cleaning products in accordance with the care instructions for the particular fabric, and test them on an inconspicuous area first.
Always check the technical specifications of the individual quality before ordering, especially when water repellency is essential to your project.
