An ottoman can serve as a seat, footstool or occasional surface. The upholstery fabric should therefore suit not only the interior style but also the shape, filling and way the piece is actually used.
Start with how it will be used
For a mainly decorative ottoman, texture and appearance can carry more weight. With daily use, abrasion resistance, care and structural stability become more important. In homes with children or pets, closely woven surfaces are often more practical than open loops.

Closely woven fabrics are versatile and available in many textures. Open weaves or long loops may snag more easily.
Chenille
Chenille provides a soft, textured surface. For an ottoman used regularly, choose a quality intended for upholstery.
Velvet
Velvet creates a rich appearance through its pile. Pressure marks and directional shading can be visible and are characteristic of the material. Cut all panels with the pile running consistently.
Bouclé
Bouclé adds pronounced texture, although open loops can be more prone to snagging. A compact quality may be more practical for intensive use.
Corduroy
Corduroy works well for relaxed furniture styles. Keep the ribs and pile direction consistent when cutting.
Faux leather
Faux leather can provide an easy-care surface. Choose a sufficiently flexible upholstery quality and follow its product-specific care instructions.
Technical properties
The Martindale rating describes abrasion resistance but is only one selection criterion. Also consider weave structure, stretch, care, seam performance and intended use. On round or strongly shaped ottomans, stretch also affects how easily the material can be upholstered.
Colour and pattern
Very light plain fabrics may show stains more readily, while hair and dust can be conspicuous on dark surfaces. Mélange or textured mid-tones may make everyday marks less noticeable. Assess colour and texture with a sample in the actual lighting of the room.
Fabric quantity
Allow for the top, sides, seam allowances, turn-under and any pattern, rib or pile direction. Removable covers also need material for the closure and fit.
The best choice is the fabric whose technical properties, feel and care requirements suit the ottoman’s real use.
