Choosing the right fabric for your furniture is an important part of refreshing your interior. A common question we get from our customers is: "How many metres of fabric do I need for my sofa, chair or armchair?" In this blog we are happy to help you make the right calculation. Why is it important to know the right amount of fabric?
Before you order fabric, it is good to know that not every piece of furniture is upholstered entirely in the same fabric. For example, the underside of sofas is often finished with Fibertex instead of the same upholstery fabric. This can affect the total amount of fabric you need. So it is important to know whether your sofa is finished this way or whether you want it fully upholstered.
How many metres of fabric do you need for a sofa?
For sofas, the amount of fabric needed can vary depending on the size, design and number of cushions. Below is a general overview:
- 2-seater sofa: On average 12–15 metres of fabric
- 3-seater sofa: On average 15–18 metres of fabric
- Corner sofa: On average 18–25 metres of fabric, depending on the dimensions

How many metres of fabric for a chair?
For a simple dining chair without armrests you usually need less fabric than for a fully upholstered armchair. Here is a guideline:
- Dining chair (without armrests): 1.5–2 metres of fabric
- Dining chair (with armrests): 2.5–3 metres of fabric
- Armchair: On average 6–8 metres of fabric
How much fabric for armchairs and luxury chairs?
Armchairs and luxury chairs often require a little more fabric, especially if they have elaborate details such as buttons, pleats or a deep seat. The average amount of fabric is between 6 and 8 metres, depending on the design.
