A dining chair with a worn seat, a sofa that is still wonderfully comfortable or a restaurant corner that is used intensively every day: that is exactly where sustainable upholstery fabrics make interior trends concrete. Sustainability is not just about a label or a recycled fibre. The best choice is a fabric that suits the furniture, stays beautiful for a long time and doesn't need replacing after a few years.
For anyone who reupholsters, produces furniture or furnishes an interior project, that means looking more cleverly at material, abrasion resistance, care and style. Current interior trends help here: they focus on warmth, texture and furniture that earns a lasting place in the home or contract interior.
Sustainable upholstery fabrics and interior trends: what is changing?
The trend is clearly moving away from quick, sleek and anonymous interiors. People are once again choosing furniture with character: reupholstering an existing armchair, restoring a quality sofa or having something made to measure instead of buying new straight away. Reupholstering is therefore often the most sustainable step you can take. The frame, filling and comfort are preserved, while the fabric gives the furniture a completely new look.
We see the same shift in colour and texture. Sand, taupe, warm grey, olive, rust and deep browns remain popular because they bring calm and combine well with wood, natural stone and metal. At the same time, upholstery can be tactile again. Bouclé, chenille, corduroy and coarse-woven upholstery fabrics give a sofa or chair more depth than a completely flat fabric.
That does not mean every trendy fabric is automatically a sensible choice. A loose bouclé can be beautiful on an armchair in a quiet reading corner, but less suitable for a family sofa with pets. In a restaurant, waiting room or hotel room the load is even greater. There, high abrasion resistance, cleanability and colour fastness count at least as much as appearance.
A long life starts with the right fabric
An upholstery fabric is sustainable when it lasts a long time in practice. That sounds obvious, but the application is still too often underestimated. A scatter cushion, a chair only used in the evening and a sofa where children, dogs and guests sit every day require completely different properties.
So look first at the construction of the fabric. Densely woven upholstery fabrics often keep their shape and cope well with daily use. Chenille feels soft and rich, but varies greatly by quality and weave. Corduroy instantly gives a warm, contemporary look, while faux leather can be a practical solution when quick cleaning is important. For hospitality, healthcare, campers or other heavily used projects, water-repellent faux leather or a strong contract fabric can save a lot of maintenance.
Abrasion resistance is an important point of attention. It is often indicated in Martindale cycles: a test that measures how well a fabric withstands rubbing. A higher rating is generally suitable for more intensive use, but it is not a stand-alone quality stamp. Pilling, the risk of fading in sunlight, stretch and the way a fabric is worked on a specific shape also determine the end result.
That is why at BLADI upholstery fabrics we don't advise on colour or trend alone, but above all on the project. A fabric that works well on a tightly upholstered pouffe is not automatically ideal for a deeply buttoned chair or a sofa with lots of curves.
Recycled is valuable, but look beyond the label
Recycled upholstery fabrics are a logical choice for a more conscious interior. Many of these fabrics use reprocessed fibres, for example from recycled polyester streams. This puts existing material to use again and can reduce the demand for new raw materials. See, for example, our GABO coarse woven.
Still, recycled is not automatically the best choice for every piece of furniture. Always check that the fabric is strong enough for the intended application and that the texture suits the way you live or work. A recycled, coarse-woven fabric with an open structure can be stunning in a calm interior, but may need more attention with pets with sharp claws. Choosing honestly is more sustainable than buying a material that sounds good but doesn't suit its use.
Synthetic fibres also deserve nuance. Polyester doesn't always have the image of a natural fibre, but it can be very hard-wearing, colourfast and easy to care for. If such a fabric lasts many years on a heavily used sofa, that is often a better choice than a less durable fabric that needs replacing quickly.
Texture is here to stay, but choose practically
The most popular interior fabrics right now have one thing in common: they make a room warmer without needing lots of extra decoration. A pronounced texture instantly gives even a simple piece of furniture more presence. That makes reupholstering all the more interesting, because a new fabric turns a familiar chair into an eye-catching part of the interior.
Bouclé remains popular for its soft, cloud-like look. Choose a furniture quality with a sturdy base and consider where it will be used. On an occasional armchair or headboard, bouclé comes into its own. For very intensive use, a finer, more compact texture is usually wiser.
Chenille is a strong choice if you want to combine comfort with a luxurious look. Its soft pile makes the fabric pleasant to the touch, while many modern chenilles are surprisingly strong. Do watch the pile direction: use and lighting can change how the colour appears. That is part of the fabric's character, but it is good to assess it beforehand with a sample.
Corduroy suits interiors with a retro or modern, relaxed look perfectly. Wide cord makes a statement and adds volume, while fine cord looks more subtle. For a crisp result, the workmanship is crucial: make the rib direction run deliberately across all pieces. Especially on a sofa with loose cushions, this prevents a messy effect.
Coarser weaves meet the demand for natural, tactile interiors. They combine beautifully with wood and calm wall colours, but their texture can make them more sensitive to dirt or claws. A melange colourway helps to hide small stains and daily use better visually than a plain, very light fabric.
Colour trends that last longer than one season
If you want to furnish sustainably, you don't have to choose only neutrals. But it does pay to use a trend colour in a way that will still work later. Deep green, cognac, terracotta, midnight blue and chocolate brown give furniture character without quickly becoming loud. Especially on an occasional chair, footstool or dining bench, colour can take centre stage.
For a large corner sofa, a calm base colour is often the safest investment. Sand, greige, taupe, beige and warm grey are easy to combine and adapt when you later choose other cushions, a rug or wall colour. Want more depth after all? Then choose a melange weave or a fabric with a subtle colour gradient. It looks livelier and is often more forgiving in daily use.
Always request fabric samples before you order. Daylight, artificial light and the colour of your floor or wall can make a fabric look completely different from how it looks on a screen. Place the sample on the furniture, look at it during the day and in the evening and feel the texture. For commercial projects, it is smart to also test the chosen sample for cleaning, intensive contact and the lighting on site.
Care helps determine how sustainable your upholstery is
Even the strongest upholstery fabric stays beautiful longer with simple, regular care. Vacuum upholstery regularly with a suitable attachment and without a hard brush, so dirt does not lodge deep in the fibres. Turn loose seat and back cushions when possible, so wear is spread more evenly.
With stains, act quickly but not aggressively. First blot up moisture with a clean, absorbent cloth. Rubbing often pushes the stain deeper into the fabric and can damage the texture. Never just use a strong cleaning product: what seems safe for clothing can cause discolouration, rings or a stiff surface on upholstery fabric. Always follow the care advice for the chosen fabric.
Sunlight also deserves attention. Dark and bright colours in particular can fade over time in direct, strong sun. Window coverings, a different furniture layout or a fabric with good light fastness then makes a visible difference. In commercial spaces, a good care routine also helps keep the interior presentable for longer.
Reupholstering as a smart interior choice
A sustainable interior doesn't have to be all new. A solid piece of furniture with a good frame is often an excellent basis for reupholstering. Check the springs, filling and foam beforehand. If a seat has sagged, a new fabric alone will not deliver the comfort you want. With new foam, Dacron and a suitable upholstery fabric, the furniture gets many more years of life.
For DIYers, a straight chair seat is an accessible first project. Measure carefully, allow extra fabric for turn-unders and any patterns, and make sure you have good tools and fixings. Larger sofas, complex armchairs and projects with seams, piping or buttons require more experience. That is exactly where the sustainable gain lies in craftsmanship: a carefully upholstered piece of furniture stays more beautiful, tighter and usable for longer.
So don't just choose the fabric that stands out most right now. Choose the fabric that suits your furniture, your use and the life that goes on around it. Then an interior trend is not a temporary purchase, but a comfortable piece of furniture you enjoy every day.
