Which fabric is suitable for an upholstered headboard?
Appearance, feel, workability and care all matter when choosing fabric for an upholstered headboard. A headboard generally receives less abrasion than seating, so comfort and design can carry more weight, although a suitable upholstery-quality fabric is still preferable.
Velvet, bouclé and chenille
Velvet creates a soft, rich surface; pile direction should be considered when cutting. Bouclé offers pronounced texture but open loops can be more prone to snagging around pets. Chenille combines a soft feel with a textured appearance. A closely woven upholstery fabric is a versatile alternative.
Faux leather
Faux leather can suit a smooth, modern headboard and, depending on the quality, may be easy to wipe clean. Always follow the product-specific care instructions.
Padding and upholstery
For a softer headboard, fabric can be applied over foam and/or fiberfill. Secure the materials evenly and choose adhesive, stapler and staples that are suitable for the substrate and materials. Buttoned or strongly curved designs require additional material allowance.
Colour and fabric quantity
A headboard creates a large area of colour, so assess a sample in both daylight and artificial light. When calculating fabric quantity, allow for the dimensions, thickness, wrapping, pile direction and any pattern repeat.
Care
Remove dust with a soft upholstery attachment and treat stains according to the care instructions for the selected quality. Test cleaning products on an inconspicuous area first.
