At BLADI you can buy elastic by the metre in five widths: 10, 15, 25, 40 and 50 mm, complemented by Prym waistband elastic of 38 mm and transparent Prym knitting elastic. Use it for waistbands, hems, covers and fitted sheets.
Which width should you choose?
- 10 and 15 mm: for sleeves, trouser legs, children's clothing and narrow channels.
- 25 mm: a versatile width for skirts, pyjama bottoms and covers that need to close around a cushion or mattress.
- 40 and 50 mm: for wide, firm waistbands and fitted sheets or covers that need to stay in place.
- Prym waistband elastic 38 mm black: designed specifically for waistbands.
- Prym knitting elastic, transparent: for knitting and jersey work where the elastic should stay invisible.
Tip: measure the circumference where the elastic will go and cut it slightly shorter so it sits under light tension. Try it around your waist or the cushion before you sew the channel closed. A safety pin helps you thread the elastic through the channel.
Elastic by the metre for sewing and upholstery
You order elastic by the metre, so you buy exactly the length you need. Wide 40 or 50 mm elastic is used for firm waistbands and covers that need to stay in place, narrow elastic for sleeves and children's clothing. Sewing a cushion cover? Our page on fabrics for cushions helps you choose the fabric. To sew in the elastic, use strong sewing thread and the right sewing machine needles, for example Jersey or stretch needles for stretchy fabrics.
