Glue and spray adhesive for upholstery

How to choose the right glue for upholstery and textiles

The right adhesive depends on the material you are bonding and the scale of the work. At BLADI, you will find spray adhesive, contact adhesive, adhesive tanks with spray guns and hoses, textile glue, wood glue, and adhesive remover. For upholstery, you typically use a contact adhesive or spray adhesive, as these allow you to attach foam rubber, cold foam, and polyether to wood, metal, or plastic.

With contact adhesive, you apply the glue to both surfaces. Let the adhesive dry according to the instructions on the packaging and then press the parts firmly together. Good preparation is just as important as the adhesive itself: work with clean, dry, and dust-free surfaces and always read the application instructions for the product you are using.

If, for example, you want to attach a loose piece of foam to a frame, a can of spray adhesive is a great starting point. If you are bonding large quantities, for instance for multiple pieces of furniture or an entire floor, it is worth using an adhesive tank.

Comparing adhesives: which one fits your project?

A brief comparison of what you will find in this collection:

  • Spray adhesive (500 ml): handy for small jobs and larger patches or surfaces. There is spray adhesive from Palty, a heat-resistant version, and a Heavy Duty spray adhesive. Check the product page for the temperature resistance and the materials the spray is suitable for.
  • Contact adhesive in a can: for example, the 1-liter neoprene-based Bijlard contact adhesive for furniture upholstery and interior construction. You apply the adhesive yourself with a brush or spatula.
  • Adhesive tank with spray gun and hose: for those who do a lot of gluing. We have 19-liter and 21.8 kg adhesive tanks, a Premium and a metal eco spray gun, and a 5.5 m black hose. You can read more about the combinations under adhesive tanks and accessories.
  • Fabric glue: Gütermann HT2 fabric glue (30 g) for repairing, hemming, and applying fabric, leather, and felt.
  • Wood glue: PVAc wood glue (500 g), available as D2 (moisture-resistant, for indoor use) and D3 (water-resistant, for damp rooms).

Are you unsure between two products? Consider the material, the size of the surface, and the temperature to which the furniture will be exposed, and feel free to ask us for advice.

Tips for a good bond

Follow a few simple steps for a neater and stronger bond:

  • Ensure both surfaces are clean, dry, and dust-free before you begin.
  • Shake the spray can well before use and apply an even coat.
  • After use, hold the can upside down and spray until only gas comes out to prevent the nozzle from clogging.
  • Ensure good ventilation when working with solvent-based adhesives.
  • Test the adhesive on a scrap piece first, especially when working with faux leather, PVC, or thin fabric.

Got glue where it doesn't belong? Use Citronel adhesive remover to clean up contact adhesive residue. Use anti-fray spray if you want to stabilize carpets, mats, or loose upholstery fabrics before cutting them.

For small gluing tasks, such as wood, paper, or fabric, you can also use a glue gun. For the rest of your upholstery project, you can find tools and materials in our other upholstery supplies. Not sure which glue you need? Send us a photo via WhatsApp or visit our showroom in Antwerp.
