Reupholster your sofa in 6 steps
- Photograph and measure the sofa before you start, so you know how everything goes back together.
- Remove the old fabric carefully. Keep the old pieces: they are your pattern for the new fabric.
- Check the padding. Replace sagging foam or worn wadding now; it determines how comfortable the seat is.
- Cut the new fabric to size using the old pieces, with a few centimetres of extra turnover.
- Stretch and staple the fabric from the centre out to the corners, so it stays taut and straight.
- Finish off with piping, decorative nails or a dust cover on the underside.
What do you need?
In addition to the upholstery fabric for your sofa, you will usually need a staple gun and staples, glue or spray adhesive for the foam, cloths and fibrefill and possibly piping or decorative nails.
Reupholstering benches and chairs
The same approach works for sofas and corner sofas; just allow for more fabric and more time. For chairs and dining chairs we have a separate step-by-step guide on reupholstering chairs. Would you rather leave it to a professional? We supply fabrics and materials to many upholsterers in Belgium and the Netherlands.
